But more than just a slick tech demo, the bite-sized experience proved a capable little platformer that suggested Sony could someday have its very own Super Mario Bros. among its stable of first-party franchises. However, similar to Playroom, the team has built a huge range of power-ups and gadgets and then built entire level concepts around them seamlessly. Each of these are fun in their own right but the sheer variety and ease of use impressed me the most. Despite often radically altering your moveset, the game never resorts to tutorial text – just a small, animated pop-up indicating basic actions.
Not every level does require you to be quick on your feet, but it’s a good reminder for when you’re tackling some of the harder levels. Astro Bot is one of the year’s biggest and best titles and it’s easy to see why. There’s a lot to do, it’s visually stunning and it’s a welcoming platformer. You can jump onto the title even if you haven’t played Astro’s Playroom or a PlayStation game in general.
We also get references to numerous classic games, including PaRappa the Rapper, Journey, and more. All in all it looks like a joyful celebration of gaming on PlayStation. Like Slot of Astro Bot, its visuals raise the bar and then some to deliver one of the prettiest games to ever appear on a PlayStation console. Packed with vibrant personality and drenched in immersive details, it sports an endlessly polished, eye-popping presentation to rival anything Pixar has ever put on the big screen. A near-perfect platforming game and probable game-of-the-year contender, Astro Bot justifies a PS5 purchase as much as any Norse God-slayer or fungal apocalypse survivor. Favorites include the ability to turn Astro Bot into a sponge, a skill with a surprising amount of benefits.
These all keep Astro’s regular proportions and outfit (mostly) but play around with it in different ways, mainly with texture and material. The main exceptions here are the Throwback Outfit – which, as we mentioned, imagines Astro as a blocky PS1 mascot – and the Skeleton Outfit – which strips Astro of his metal shell, leaving only a bony interior behind. Once you manage to beat the Great Master Challenge, you’ll rescue the 301st Bot, the Master Onion Bot from PaRappa the Rapper. This will also award you with several other cosmetics, including the Classic Dual Speeder colour and the Throwback Costume for Astro. However, the order in which you unlock new outfits from the Gatcha Lab is completely random and you can even unlock outfits from Bots you have yet to rescue. Additionally, new capsules will only arrive in the Gatcha Lab as you rescue more Bots, meaning that there is a limit.
It’s hard not to care for these adorable robots, and spend hours on end just meeting more of them. Besides the bosses, none of the enemies have names or identities. This robs the enemies of the kind of simple but memorable personalities that even the most generic Bots have. Astro Bot has six worlds and dozens of levels to complete with Bots, Puzzle Pieces, and Costumes to collect, secret portals to find, and trophies to earn. IGN’s 100% Astro Bot walkthrough will guide you to every collectible and secret. Preorders also let you immediately unlock the Lovestruck Lyricist in-game outfit for Astro, which is based on Parappa The Rapper, immediately at launch.
Did you know you can catch the bugs in Apes On The Loose with your net? You can find the Golden Butterfly at the very back of the Apes On The Loose level, in a bush to the right of the sky bridge where you find Sky-Walking Ape Special Bot. Use the checklists below to help fill in those gaps and track what you need to collect to work towards Platinum. A video speaks a thousand words so please check out our first trailer to see the game in action. The fact that Team Asobi’s games have the potential to become someone’s first game is something that Doucet takes seriously. “Team Asobi’s studio is just across the street from our building, so they were always the first to prototype with our hardware,” says Senior Principal Product Manager Toshi Aoki, product director for the DualSense controller.
Using Astro’s jets here will break the glass beneath the decorations, allowing players to drop down and open the chest containing the mouse power-up from the Downsize Surprise stage. Shrinking down and heading through the nearby tunnel will take them to a new area with a ship in a bottle. After reverting to normal size to pull out the cork, players should shrink down once again and head inside the bottle to find a gift containing the Antler Adventurer outfit.
Art & Animation: Everything Begins With Gameplay Ideas
And I have to say that I found it an extremely immersive experience. Actions such as tilting, and breathing into the mic were looped in perfectly which only served to heighten the experience of platforming and bolstered Astro Bot’s uniqueness. In line with the prequel, you get numerous power-ups at each level that will govern the way you play the game.
The game serves as a sequel to Astro’s Playroom, the third installment of the Astro Bot series, and marks Team Asobi’s first game developed since its separation from Japan Studio. In my particular case, my experience with Mario all those years ago had a massive impact on the trajectory of my life. It affected not only my hobby and interests and circle of friends, but also my career. It’s hard to imagine that I would have gone into writing about games professionally without catching the bug from an early age.
Across the game’s dozens of levels, you’ll see many abilities like these, and in nearly every case, they are a resounding success. The new game, simply called Astro Bot and developed (like the others) by Team Asobi, kicks off when a group of robots’ PS5 mothership is attacked, scattering the robots throughout the galaxy. Your job as Astro is to go around to all the planets and collect your friends. The games have lots of fun platforming to execute, with grappling hooks and hover-jumps and all kinds of fun things. There are also plenty of alien and robotic enemies and bosses to take on.
Its wild characters and artful, innovative games are particularly favored in Astro Bot’s directory of PlayStation history. Like Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot is not just a game that PS5 owners can play themselves, but also one that they can share with their less-experienced loved ones. Will this new adventure bring Astro even closer to mascot character status?
Abilities
For this you need to get The Prince bot (character from Katamari series) and his Gatcha Item ‘Rolling Star’ which is a big sticky ball. You also need the camera which is acquired when entering the Safari Park in Crash Site hub area for the first time. In the level Bubbling Under, after you reach the big open area where you must destroy purple locks to free a starfish, swim up to the surface. Throughout Bot of War, you can find 8 of Odin’s Ravens from the God of War games. In the level Construction Derby you will find yourself in a big room right after obtaining the Rocket Dog powerup. Destroy the wooden crates in the area with the basketball court and hit a ball towards the net to dunk it.
This is a grand re-opening for Astro Bot, and it surely marks the start of what is destined to be a beloved series shooting for the moon. In tandem with expert level design are the game’s diverse and exciting mechanics. At the start of nearly every level, Astro jumps into a suit or straps on a backpack of some kind that gives them a new ability. In one level, it’s spring-powered boxing gloves resembling cartoon frogs. In another, it’s a robo-dog that gives the bipedal bot a wall-smashing rocket boost, or in another, a time-freezing tool that allows Astro to scale otherwise impossibly fast-moving sections.
But once that awesome level was finished, I never saw the mechanic used again. Astro Bot feels like it’s showing off at times, but never in a way that pats itself on its back. It’s ceaselessly cute and clever, and feels more like a little kid delighted to show you their toy collection than a braggart displaying their trophies.
