These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s map is far more expansive than its predecessor. In fact, it’s about twice as large, with new areas of New York City added in the sequel, including Brooklyn, Queens, and the East River. Traversing New York City feels more exhilarating in the sequel, thanks to introducing the new web wings that make getting around easier and more fun. As Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 begins to wrap up after a climactic fight against Venom in Together, plot threads are tied up, whilst others are newly established, hinting at possible things to come in the inevitable future of the series. While Downtown Brooklyn is actually much larger in real New York City, you can still check some known places like Coney Island and and the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Harry reunited with Peter and Mary Jane early in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, apparently cured of his terminal condition and ready to use his family’s resources to change the world. In reality, Harry had secretly bonded with the Venom symbiote, which hid within Harry’s body, with its origin revealed to be from a meteorite recovered by Oscorp years prior. After learning Peter is Spider-Man, Harry uses the symbiote to help his best friend fight crime and help people around New York.
Oftentimes, a selling point of a PlayStation PC port is that they bundle the base game with DLC in a single, convenient package. Spider-Man 2 didn’t have any story DLC, but Insomniac did add new suits to the game through free content updates. As expected, PC gamers have the chance to unlock these post-launch suits in their version of the game, meaning they technically have a more “complete” version of Spider-Man 2 at launch than PS5 gamers did. There are no plans for Spider-Man 2 to get any substantial DLC, so Spider-Man 2 on PC can be considered the full experience. The story bounces between the two, letting players switch on the fly between the characters to progress along their individual and shared threads. Peter acts as Miles’ mentor and gets to exist firmly in a space where the movies (interested only in the drama) and the comics (interested only in sadism) have always refused to let him be.
Thankfully, the team at Insomniac seem to have realized this, creating very few scenarios where the stealth is forced outside of mini-game sequences and, of course, Mary Jane. Since the dawn of Atari, there have been dozens of Spider-Man games, and despite the occasional gem, most developers have struggled to embody what makes the wall crawler work. It isn’t about power fantasy or the rogue’s gallery, it’s about the little things.
